"Fiber-optics: from biosensing to theranostics"

Optical fibers can not only be used to detect biomarkers and achieve early diagnosis of diseases, but also can be used for the treatment of disease. In this talk, I will report our recent progresses in the sensitivity enhancement of optical fiber biosensors and the development of optical fiber probe for cancer sensing and therapy. The functional optical fiber biosensors are capable of detecting the target biomolecules with high sensitivity, ultra-small sample requirement, and rapid response. The functional integrated optical fiber needles can perform rapid in-vivo tumor detection, and can release heat or drugs to directly tackle malinant tumors.

Short bio: Yang Ran is a Professor in the Institute of Photonics Technology, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. He received the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Jinan University in 2013. Then he joined Institute of Photonics Technology, Jinan University, as a lecture and was promoted to an associated Professor in 2016 and a Full Professor in 2019, respectively. He was a visiting scientist in Prof. Tuan Vo-dinh Group at Duke University, Durham, NC, USA during 2017-2018. His research activities include optical fiber sensing, fiber Bragg gratings, biosensors, and optical theranostics. He had been granted by 10 more competitive funds, including NSFC key project. He has authored and coauthored more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Advanced Science, Advanced Fiber Materials, Chemical Engineering Journal, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, which have been cited more than 1800 times (H-index: 26). He presented over 10 more invited talks at international conferences and hold 10 issued/pending patents. He is currently in the editorial board of Optics and Laser technology, serving as an associated editor.
