La Dr.ssa Mariagiovanna Gianfreda post-doc del centro Studi e Ricerche "E. Fermi", Roma, terrà un seminario dal titolo:
"Theoretical formulation and experimental realization of PT -symmetric systems"
Abstract
It has been recently discovered that the requirement for a Hamiltonian to be Hermitian can be weakened to include complex non-Hermitian PT -symmetric Hamiltonians; that is, Hamiltonians that are symmetric under combined space reflection P and time reversal T .
In this talk I will briefly describe the mathematical background on which PT -symmetric Quantum Mechanics is based and I will mention a number of long-standing theoretical problems that have been solved by means of the techniques of PT symmetry.
The core of the talk will be devoted to the explanation of how PT -symmetric physical systems can be experimentally realized. In fact, in the last few years, a big amount of experiments based on PT -symmetric systems are being performed, among which, optical systems combining balanced loss and gain profiles provide a unique platform to implement classical analogues of quantum systems described by PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. These systems can exhibit interesting features such as unidirectional invisibility and perfect transmission. I will give some details about the experiments that will be conducted at IFAC-CNR involving spherical micro-cavities for observing the PT-phase transition and for verifying the validity of a theoretical model proposed.
To conclude, I will mention a possible description of PT-symmetric systems in the context of Quantum Optics.
