"Urban remote sensing by data fusion of radar and spectral data"

Using multiple sensors is mandatory in urban areas, and this is true at multiple spatial and geographical scales. This lecture will provide a few results or urban area extent characterization at the regional/national level for different urban areas in the world, considering fusion of Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral) data, as well as Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Night-time lights data.
Multispectral data allow to discriminate among materials thanks to their response at multiple wavelengths to the solar illumination, while radar data are sensitive to the electric permittivity and the geometric structure of the objects. Therefore, the two data sets are highly complementary. Similarly, exploiting the spatial resolution of Sentinel-1 data to focus the change vector analysis of joint Sentinel-1 and Night-time data to the built-up area, and the correlation between the radar backscatter and the structural variations in two and three dimensions within the humans settlement, it is possible to automatically look for intra-urban patterns of change and recognize different temporal behaviors.
